Thunderbirds 1965

What do you think... Should Thunderbirds 1965 be "canon" on the wiki? If you strip it down, it's basically just a fan project.

 guyus24 (Talk) 23:56, 12.23.2015

The visuals may be "fan", but the storyline and audio are "canon", IMHO --Sigmund 2014 (talk) 00:06, December 24, 2015 (UTC)
Yes, the audio stories are canon, it's just whether we want Stephen's visual stuff on the wiki.
 guyus24 (Talk) 00:07, 12.24.2015
We've even got pics on here from Specsavers ads, so how could we not allow pics from TB1965 --Sigmund 2014 (talk) 00:31, December 24, 2015 (UTC)
Agreed with what's already been said. One possible idea I have for the matter would be to keep the trio of pages for the original records as canon, while adding a template at the top of all Thunderbirds 1965 pages. The template would say something like "The following page is Apocrypha. The Thunderbirds Wiki acknowledges the existence of this material, but does not consider it to be official Thunderbirds canon."
Another issue is the sizable amount of TB65 publicity photos on official character pages. We could either delete them outright, or create a new heading at the bottom of each page for the photos. These are the definitive solutions, and anyone's more than welcome to suggest their own ideas.
As a result, whatever it may be, the Wiki might need a new page or Forum article where we discuss and clarify what is (and isn't) part of the site's canon policy. PaulAgnew (talk) 05:42, December 24, 2015 (UTC)
This wiki is absolutely riddled with non-canon stuff. I fail to see why we should mete out special treatment to the kickstarter episodes. As for the photos, it's all due to Ian. If he doesn't add a caption spelling out the source of the image, let's just delete it on sight from now on. He's not going to stop adding tb65 pics until he's uploaded every darn frame. --Sigmund 2014 (talk) 02:14, December 25, 2015 (UTC)
I've initiated a discussion on the forums with two examples: TheHood1 (talk) 22:23, December 25, 2015 (UTC)

Message regarding IP

I've been having problems with this user who pretty much stalked me and some of my friends last year.  I thought he'd gone away when we threatened to report him to the police, however he's back and asking me to talk to him again.  This is someone who tracked down and published private details of some of my friends online.

I've blocked him from my wikia, and he's been blocked from others in the fandom.  However, seeing as I once made an edit on the 'Alan Tracy' page here, this means I now have a talk page here and he's been leaving messages for me on it as well.  I've just deleted the last one.  It's the only avenue he has left to contact me, and I'd appreciate if it could be shut off?  Just a message from this guy is enough to bring on anxiety in me.

Hi Sigmund 2014, please can you delete this page - I cannot stand a lack of informational content on it thus is not worth reading. Yellow Model

The yellow model you poster on your page started life out as a red Superon tanker in Path Of Destruction, before being painted yellow and becoming the Secuirty Tanker in Captain Scarlet.
guyus24drop a line22:16, 4.15.2016

Thanks, I found it in the episode CSATM episode Winged Assassin shortly after.
What about the "Transporters" in Path Of Destruction though? They look exactly the same too, minus the fuel tanks. I would bet a dollar to a donut hole that the Transporters are simply the Tankers with the fuel tanks removed. WDYT?

Weigh(t)less & Failess

G'day Sigmund, I saw you asking for help with the Ready, Set... Danger quote, and I'm more than happy to assist. :)

The episode began with Tripp fooling around with his virtual reality helmet. In the program, a still image of him was placed over some digitally-rendered waves, creating the illusion that he was 'surfing the web'. While showing off his digital sporting prowess, Tripp declared himself "Weighless and failess man, King of the Cyberwave...".

In answer to your question, "Weightless" is indeed the correct spelling. However, Tripp pronounced the word as "Weighless". He did this to sound cool, and make the sentence flow better. One of the Hack Master's primary habits was creating new slang and cutting off the odd word, such as "Lookin' good!" or "You wanna talk to me about somethin'?". When said aloud, 'Weighless' and 'Failess' (with heavy emphasis on the L) flow stronger together than 'WeighTless' and 'Failess'.

When I wrote the article, I almost used "Weightless" for the quote, but went with "Weighless", because that's how he pronounced the word on-screen. As for "Failess", that's definitely a real word, though it's used by Tripp in this instance as slang.

Hopefully this clears up any confusion, and if you have any other questions or comments, pelase feel free to ask. PaulAgnew (talk) 04:18, April 26, 2016 (UTC)

OK, great. You're right, "weightless" just doesn't work.
The apostrophe is commonly used to mark the omission of one or more letters. This leads me to suggest "Weigh'less and failless". WDYT?
As regards "failess" (or "failless"): I can't find any immediate proof that it's a real word. I think the usual term is "unfailing". --Sigmund 2014 (talk) 23:44, April 26, 2016 (UTC)

Why did you revert my edit to Heist Society?

(Apologies in advance if anything is garbled -- I'm not accustomed to Wikia's interface eye candy.)

Why was my edit to Heist Society reverted? Century 21 isn't just some random production company from the '60s -- it's quite connected to Thunderbirds history.

--SinisterGM (talk) 00:21, May 15, 2016 (UTC)

Hmmm... well, you said "The name was changed to align with sister merchandising companies, including Century 21 Records". This is clearly absurd, as it implies that Century 21 Records already existed when the company was renamed. Century 21 Records wasn't a sister company, it was a subsidiary. --Sigmund 2014 (talk) 00:29, May 15, 2016 (UTC)
Wikipedia cites Gerry Anderson's biography to the following effect: "AP Films was renamed Century 21 Productions to align it with its growing merchandising sister companies Century 21 Merchandising, Century 21 Toys and Century 21 Music." I read that to mean that AP Films was renamed after the others were founded (although maybe they were all founded/renamed at the same time).
In any case, the rest is certainly correct. Why not simply remove the sentence you thought was incorrect?
--SinisterGM (talk) 00:34, May 15, 2016 (UTC)
I think we should cross check the information. Wikipedia's not reliable to a certain degree; almost all of it can be edited by anyone. I'm going to look into what you said in that particular sentence. KarlGold (talk) 11:33, May 15, 2016 (UTC)

I was thinking of requesting it be enabled on here, WDYT? It might be a good idea because TB2015's Season 2 is coming up and there's a lot of hype online. If there was no TB2015, and just TOS, it'd be out of the picture. I love forums. Discussions... Well, I'm ready to give it a go.

I've gone and enabled it anyway :p. I don't think it can be turned off unless it's causing a lot of trouble, though. Also, wikitext doesn't work as it's not built on MediaWiki software. Normal hyper links do though, and they put it in the nice "image on the left text on the right" box sorta thing.
guyus24drop a line06:43, 2.10.2016

I'm thinking of using the bot to rename the categories "Thunderbirds (TV)" and "Thunderbirds (1965 TV)" to "Classic Thunderbirds", that can incorporate comic stories and much, much more that isn't TV. WDYT?
guyus24drop a line06:41, 1.10.2016

Well, it's a complicated question. On the one hand, those two cat.s are basically identical at the moment, so I guess something needs to be done. And if a cat. is called TB (TV), why can't the TB2086 stuff go in it? TB2086 is also TV. And some episodes of "1965 TV" are actually from 1966, so that's confusing as well. On the other hand, I know Welton is keen to have a cat. purely for the classic TV series, simply because he doesn't like the two classic movies. So I think you should probably discuss it with him before you change anything.... --Sigmund 2014 (talk) 16:51, October 1, 2016 (UTC)

I've found some better looking Italian TBAG posters: [1] [2] [3]

It also appears to have been called Thunderbirds Are Go: Il Film on DVD releases: [4] [5]

Interestingly enough, it looks like the film was colour treated rather badly - the blues on the IR uniform are now red: [6] [7]

It's possible the poster drew some inspiration from Gerry's other film, Journey to the Far Side of the Sun, better known as Doppelganger: [8]

Make that also Brain's shirt and cardigin, Parker's Jacket, The Hood's suit and the uniform of the Fireflash crew (the image is the Hood dressed as the pilot). Also not sure if it counts as I don't see a button, but Parker's white jacket in 'Undercover' closes on the character left as well. Meikahidenori (talk) 08:42, November 17, 2016 (UTC)

Have you seen this? I found it while browsing on Twitter. Looks like the building of (one of) the life-size FAB 1s. Made in the old "Berkley works". Interesting bit of info regardless.

Edge of Impact has the Hood with a button too. ;) sorry it's not a blue ray image (i only own the dvd version) so it may not be useable for much else other than your gallery. Meikahidenori (talk) 00:46, December 15, 2016 (UTC)

I think in regards to the GDF uniform in TAG, the design to have the buttons on the top brass's uniforms on the character's left hand side is a design choice, as I've only ever found one instance where it is on the right hand side. all other occurrences are on the left.

most of the images invoving high ups in the GDF have the same design with the buttons

This is the ONLY image with someone in the GDF high command uniform where the buttons are on the opposite side (the blonde woman)

small spacing + 220px or normal spacing + 198px, which is better?

Afternoon ;)

small spacing + 220px or normal spacing + 198px, which is better? May have to ask Jack, as I just went off the normal gallery spacing he told me to do for them when I asked him on twitter when I first made the pages up.

Meikahidenori (talk) 03:39, December 19, 2016 (UTC)

Yeah, I like 220px with the small spacing, but it's imaginary policy that small spacing is only used on gallery-intensive pages, like missions and appearances. I've been looking into a way to change the gallery presets to make the default width 198, but I don't think it can be done...

While I like the Thunderbird 4 one, I don't think it can do on all the pages. What do we do with all the images? Also, why do we change all the pages just to conform to the TB4 one? It'd be much easier to just bring it into line with the others.

There's a feature on the dev wiki called CatNav. It's able to search through multiple categories to find pages, for example searching for Male Characters and Classic Thunderbirds will only return males from classic Thunderbirds, rather than combining them with TB2004 and 2015.

A second chance

I am a user who has known the user, User:Ian678, for some time on the James Bond Wiki and I have seen that he has been blocked on here because he had inserted false information into articles. I think that you went a bit too far thereby blocking him indefinitely and your last comment after the reason for being blocked on the block log sounded offensive and unprofessional. He had made over 3,000 edits here and besides the last edits here, he has been a healthy contributor here. I had issues with him putting articles into improper categories that don't make any sense, but I have corrected them and told him that a person is not a documentary for example. So he is also a healthy contributor on the 007 Wiki. He should have realized what his actions caused, but please give him another chance. Please don't block him indefinitely, just block him for a month to a year so he could continue to be a healthy contributor on the wiki whilst still being punished temporarily. Out of curiosity, How well do you know him and did he do anything similar to this before? He could learn how to be a better member of this wiki if he his given a second chance. I am not trying to defend him, but you can be a bit more civilized and sensible about this.

Thank You

Re: Container Rocket / Christmas Rocket

Hello, Sigmund - and Happy New Year!  :-)

An observation, if I may, re the Container Rocket / Christmas Rocket page. The proper name Saunders Automations, so far as I can determine in the transcript for Give or Take A Million, does not include an apostrophe. On that basis, I removed the one I found in the Infobox. (The character Saunders doesn't have one in his name, either.) Hopefully this won't be confusing!

Re: The Third Man

Hi, Sigmund -

Been thinking about the character in The Man From MI-5 identified only as The Third Man. Since he's never referenced by any other means, does it then make sense that we recognize this as a sort of de facto proper name (wherever it appears)?

Also: given the episode's general subject matter, would it be apropos to note under Trivia that this character's "name" might have been inspired by the famous 1949 film of the same name? In any event, I'd be curious to know if there was ever any sort of "backstory" to it. (Perhaps someone, somewhere, remembers?) Let me know what you think, would you?

Best, as ever, Boatshewsd2 (talk) 23:32, January 8, 2018 (UTC)

Does it makes sense? It is certainly convenient. I guess he's called "Third Man" in the script, so why not use that as his name. As for your second point, it seems highly probably to me that they had that movie on their mind when they decided on "Third Man" instead of, say, "Third Gangmember" but I'm not sure if this is Trivia or not. --Sigmund 2014 (talk) 10:08, February 12, 2018 (UTC)

I have a copy of Thunderbirds Vol 16 from my dad and it only says 'A Gerry Anderson Production' instead of "A Gerry & Sylvia Anderson Production" like it's supposed to.

Is this a sign of a second reprint (which doesn't seem like the right word but oh well)?

Laughing.Thalia 01:27, February 12, 2018 (UTC)

I don't know if these are two different editions (a first one and a reissue). It could well be that they only changed the paper insert, for example, after Gerry Anderson's lawyers told them to cease and desist! This is pure speculation of course, but I definitely don't think Gerry would have liked it very much. --Sigmund 2014 (talk) 10:18, February 12, 2018 (UTC)

ADD: The Third Man...

Hi, Sigmund - Thanks so much for getting back to me on this. Much appreciated! :-)

You've likely noted that, on The Third Man's page, I included (only known name) as something of a qualifier; did the same, BTW, for Black Phantom on his page, and for pretty much the same reason...

As to the film reference, I guess we'll always be wondering, hmm?

Re Lilian: Punt or Punch?

Hi, Sigmund -

Just saw your note about Lilian's page. Got me to wondering, so took another look at that episode's transcript; a little ways further on from Parker's saying he fancied taking L out for a "punt," he's admiring himself in the mirror and singing "Jolly boating weather!" So on that basis, I would observe that he did indeed mean "punt." (Of course, that doesn't necessarily preclude the two of them stopping off somewhere for a nice, refreshing cold glass of punch...! ;-) )

Picture This!

Hi, Sigmund -

Hoping the world's treating you well... :-)

I really like the new images lately appearing on some of the Episode pages - and, in that regard, might I respectfully venture a comment or two?

Re Pit of Peril: the image shown of TB1's Remote-Control Hover Camera, appears to be from Edge of Impact, where it's used at night. In Pit of Peril, though, TB1 deploys it in broad daylight. I checked the RCHC page, and there's a nice POP image of it emerging from TB1 that shows it off really well. Might a substitution be in order?

Re Locations: do you think Tracy Island should be included in each episode's Locations image gallery? Or better, perhaps, that we just take it as a "given" that it's there?

With best regards, as always, --Boatshewsd2 (talk) 00:05, May 30, 2018 (UTC)

I don't think there's much point to listing Tracy Island as a location, but we can definitely link to various parts of it, like the Swimming Pool (Tracy Island), the billiards room, etc.
The POP image is too dark IMHO, it should be redone. --Sigmund 2014 (talk) 08:31, May 31, 2018 (UTC)

Introducing Special:Analytics

So I bring some great news on a new feature introduced at Fandom!

Special:Analytics is a new statistics tracking tool for admins on all Fandom wikis.

This feature includes some really insightful statistics that should allow you guys to inform some wiki decisions, such as:

  • Top viewed pages
  • # of page views (daily over the past 30 days)
  • Most visited files
  • Desktop vs mobile sessions
  • and more!

So as I mentioned above, this feature is really great as it allows you to see what areas are doing very well and how you can capitalise on them. For example, the tool shows one of your wiki's most popular search terms is Vehicles. You could have that redirected to Category:Vehicles so that search term takes users to where they want to be straight away. That's just one way this feature is super useful! :)

Hopefully you like this feature, it's been highly requested for some time and we would really appreciate your feedback on it. For more help with it, please feel free to ask me questions and also refer to these two super useful articles:

Thanks! --Spongebob456 talk 14:15, August 10, 2019 (UTC)

Better Navigation

Hey, long time no check in. Hope you're well.

You've probably not seen these. The wikia staff are writing some "best practices" guides and some of them are pretty interesting: Cats&Nav + NavBar

I think better navigation on this wiki is much needed. If you look at Special:Lonelypages, there's 581 pages that aren't linked to from anywhere else on the wiki. Admittedly, most of them are 2004 crew pages (need a complete list nested on a subpage), but there are some others that probably should be better linked in.

As someone on Facebook once said in relation to the wiki, the navigation here is pretty awful. I'd agree. I think, now the "creation boom" is over (we seem to have covered everything in the classic series), we should make it easier for everyone to get to it. Trying to make the SEO better with image cats and description goes only so far, but when the users are here we need to make it easier for them to find stuff.

One of the things I've wanted to fix for a while is the navigation right at the top of the page. Most of it is pretty useful to editors, but by far the most traffic here are just normal users here to find an article or two. We've literally only got one dropdown dedicated to navigation, when it should really be 4 or 5.

Categories I think are another thing. Apparently, merely linking to categories to create them isn't enough - you've got to then go in to the category page and add some text to create it properly. And categories are all supposed to then be categorized up the tree, all the way to Category:Browse, which this FishTank chap seems to think we should rename to "Thunderbirds Wiki".

I was just wondering, before I started working on the new system, if there was anything specific improvements you wanted to see? We seem to be the only two admins really active here anymore (I think Welton's wife finally snapped :P), so good communication shouldn't be too hard to come by. You've also probably seen the Discord widget in the sidebar? If you'd want to make an account on that we can set up a chatroom to talk about things in private, away from sniping prying eyes.

Catch ya around,
guyus24drop a line09:06, 26.8.2019

I don't know much about navigation, nor about discord. Maybe we should have infoboxes like the one at the bottom of this page: We can just use them to put tons of links all over the place. --Sigmund 2014 (talk) 00:06, August 28, 2019 (UTC)

Interesting, but I didn't really ask if they met, I only asked if The Hood would have recognized her if by chance they had met in TIS. In fact, it turns out they met in DES and he didn't recognize her. That means he certainly wouldn't have recognized her in TIS. So if they both were in the Departure Lounge - London Airport in TIS, he would not have known she was the daughter of his brother, nor that she was part of IR. --Sigmund 2014 (talk) 22:39, June 30, 2020 (UTC)

Red links help Wikipedia grow... a red link should be allowed to remain in an article if it links to a title that could plausibly sustain an article... Good red links help Wikipedia..."

In an ideal world new pages should only be made from red links becuase those are what the needs are. Anon had the right idea but was too eager about it. Orphaned pages are generally a bigger problem because they wreck the natural 'flow'/navigation of the wiki - there are no links to these pages, which begs the question 'how do users get there?'. Yes there is a broader problem here on TB Wiki - but knee-jerking and trying to remove all red links is certainly not the right reaction.

New Block Policy

guyus24drop a line09:27, 21.2.2021

I could never agree with those rules. We have a lot of content based on the visual evidence. People will try to use these rules to get rid of that. As you may remember, Sniper already tried that once: every puppet identification was mere "speculation". Sigmund 2014 (talk) 10:17, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
Yes there are flaws. I am a big fan of 'original research', especially here where there is very little prior research. Trying to force everything into a reference like SK did will only hinder the ability to grow. Plz talk at the thread to keep everything in one place. New rules come into place on Apr 1st so ideally it should be sorted before then (and punishments need a rethink too IMO).

The mini albums

I finished them off. I did it because I was looking for another one that mentioned a date like the Sun Probe one. But I found no other date's mentioned. BarrowInFurness (talk) 06:40, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
