Roger Lyon is a secret agent who works for Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward, and eventually for International Rescue. He appeared in various Lady Penelope-centric stories.
Biography[]
Early Adventures with Penny[]
After Lady Penelope recruits Parker in Mr. Steelman, so he can steal the hydromic device plans from the Luthvian Embassy, Roger Lyon himself breaks into Creighton-Ward Mansion to extract the plans while it's under attack from Mr. Steelman's mercenary army. Taking them to the nearby Dunwell atomic reactor, he destroys the plans by using the plant's technology to bombard them with radioactive isotopes. After leaving the plant, he is pursued by some of Steelman's goons - Gardoni and Luigi - who run his car off the road and kidnap him, but Lyon is able to send an emergency signal back to Lady Penelope beforehand. Taken to a luxurious boat moored at the docklands, he activates a locator hidden in his watch, before coming face-to-face with the robotic Mr. Steelman.
Roger meets the robotic Mr. Steelman for the first time (Mr Steelman)
Steelman believes Roger would have glanced at the plans before destroying them, but knows that as an agent of Lady Penelope, he would be immune to torture. After the boat arrives in Pompeii, he is taken to Mr. Steelman's secret base underneath Mt Vesuvius, where the evil scientist has a mind-reading device. Before the device is used on Roger, however, Lady Penelope and Parker have caught up and broken into the hidden lab. The duo are able to overpower Mr. Steelman and his goons and blow the laboratory up, triggering the dormant volcano's eruption. Out of harm's way, Roger is taken to hospital to recover.
Roger is sent to the North Pole by Lady Penelope in Ice Bound, in order to investigate the disappearance of two Universal Secret Service agents. He sends a code-worded message back to Penny to say he has found something significant, but his message cuts off before he can finish sending it. The USS agents he is tracking were kidnapped by a group of Bereznik sailors, who wanted to know the location of the World Government's polar region HQ, but Roger is kidnapped himself before he is able to do anything about it. His cut-off message alerts Lady Penelope to his situation, who makes her way to the North Pole and tracks him to the Bereznik submarine. Penelope easily overpowers everyone on the submarine by dropping a canister of knock-out gas down the main air intake, and Parker is able to break into the cells to release Roger and the kidnapped USS agents.
Working for International Rescue[]
By the time of Cool For Danger, Roger is working for International Rescue as one of their European agents, alongside Lady Penelope and Parker, and has managed to track down the elusive Mr. Steelman to a remote cave system in Revonia. Roger loses their brief confrontation and is sent to the feared Schloss Stillban prison, with his memory partially wiped and imprisoned in the solitary confinement cell dubbed the "Black Hole". It takes months for Lady Penelope to track him down and help him escape, needing the help of Flaginne, a local cracksman who had served time in the Stillban before. The cave system Roger had found was not only where Steelman was hiding out, but also home to General Lazio and his resistance army, who wished to overthrow to government of Revonia. The prison break works, but Roger finds himself injured in the explosion that breaks his cell.
With Roger out of prison, Mr. Steelman sends out Tania Lazio, the General's daughter, to track down Roger and assassinate him before he can divulge information about the cave system to Lady Penelope. Tania is, however, outsmarted by Lady Penelope, who finds the mini explosive Tania has planted and disarms it. Knowing that Steelman and the rebels are on their tail, Lady Penelope and Roger, along with Parker and Flaginne, rush to the cave system disguised as tourists to minimise suspicion.
Upon discovering the cave is actually home to Lazio's army, Roger and Lady Penelope agree that the situation is too much for them to handle on their own and try to make a getaway, but are met with Steelman's robot army, programmed to track down and kidnap Penelope. Realising the robots are following Lady Penelope's scent, she douses a mountain goat with her perfume, and the trio watch on as the army arrives to dismantle the rebels' operations.
Still injured from his earlier prison break, Roger is left at the Hotel St. Goar to recover, while Lady Penelope and Parker go off to find Steelman.
Trivia[]
- Lyon is depicted as having black hair during the Eric Eden illustrated Mr. Steelman story, but the Michael Strand drawn Bullets for the Bride and The Assassination Threat would both depict him as blond. Frank Langford would depict him with dark hair in the original black and white version of Ice Bound, while whoever recoloured the story for its reprint in colour would choose a dark blue.
