"Operation Asteroids" is the third serial of Anderson Entertainment's Thunderbirds series, released digitally on April 29, 2022. It is presented as an audiobook and audio-play hybrid.

It is an adaptation of John W. Jennison's original Operation Asteroids novel, published in 1966.

Plot[]

What starts out as a simple rescue mission to save a trapped miner on the Moon soon turns out to be one of International Rescue's greatest catastrophes. After the Hood takes members of International Rescue hostage during the rescue, a chase across space and an altercation among the asteroids only worsens the situation. With the Hood hijacking Thunderbird 3 along with Brains, Lady Penelope and Tin-Tin, it is up to the Tracy brothers to stage a daring rescue in the mountain tops of his hidden lair. But can they rescue Brains before his engineering genius is used for the destructive forces of evil?

Trivia[]

  • The story was recorded on the 5th, 7th, 14th and 24th of January, 2022.
  • Despite the original novel being published under the author's real name, John W. Jennison, this version credits him as Theydon, his pen-name.
  • While the digital version was released by Big Finish on April 29, physical CD sets from Anderson Entertainment had been available in the preceding two weeks.
  • Unlike the first two audiobooks, this volume doesn't conclude with a behind-the-scenes chat; instead, it concludes with an instrumental remix of various themes originally composed by Barry Gray.
  • Jeff makes a reference to the events of Peril in Peru when he realises that the Hood is responsible for Kyrano's mental attacks. The Hood later confirms this to Virgil, although he also admits that despite his power, he has been unable to force Kyrano to reveal the location of Tracy Island.
  • Gordon pilots Thunderbird 2 back to Tracy Island from the spaceport in Australia. Then, for the volcano rescue in the Indian Ocean, Jeff (on his mother's suggestion) pilots Thunderbird 2 (Pod 4) with Gordon and Parker onboard.
  • Thunderbird 3 lands vertically on the surface of the Moon. However, it lands horizontally on the planetoid Ceres upon short hydraulic stilts extended from its hull.
  • Scott and Alan travel together in Thunderbird 1 to the Hood's hidden lair in Tibet.
