The Light-Type is a hand-held message sender. The message is typed into a keyboard on the back of the machine and the screen lights up when pointed forward.
In Operation Crash-Dive, Gordon Tracy used this (underwater) to tell the crew of the sunken Fireflash 4 that he was going to cut the engines off. This would allow the plane to float back to the surface, so a rescue could be made.

Keyboard
The keyboard has only 22 keys so there's not enough room for all the letters. They are arranged in QWERTY order, though the "B" seems to be missing.
