"I would like you to know that your scheme, to move the Empire State Building, strikes me as being daring and imaginative. Redevelopment...is vital. But so too is the preservation of national monuments and institutions. The Empire State Building is such a monument... Jeff Tracy"

The Empire State Building has been an architectural, cultural and historic icon of New York City; ever since its construction and debut in the early 1930s. For a number of years, this towering Art Deco masterpiece held the record as the world's tallest building; and it has been an enduring favourite with visitors to its Midtown Manhattan location, who can enjoy panoramic city views from its upper-floors observatory area.

Over the years, the distinctive skyscraper has been featured in numerous films - most famously, perhaps, in the climax of the 1933 adventure classic King Kong (later faithfully recreated, in the 2005 version) - as well as on television (see next section)...

The Empire State Building is an officially-designated New York City Landmark, and a US National Historic Landmark. It's also been listed on the US National Register of Historic Places.

In The World Of Thunderbirds[]

The Empire State Building stands squarely at the center of events, in the episode Terror in New York City.

Elaborate and detailed planning had been done, to facilitate the moving of the entire structure to a new location, so that modern redevelopment could be carried out at the site. The time for the move to actually commence, is at hand...

To a worldwide TV audience, N.T.B.S. reporter Ned Cook describes the scene, as his cameraman Joe is filming...

At Tracy Island, the extended Tracy household watches with particular interest. Jeff had been invited to come to New York and view the operation, but he sent his regrets instead, in a letter he dictated to Tin-Tin (a portion of which appears above)...
