The Empire State Building has been an architectural, cultural and historic icon of New York City; ever since its construction and debut in the early 1930s. For a number of years, this towering Art Deco masterpiece held the record as the world's tallest building; and it has been an enduring favourite with visitors to its Midtown Manhattan location, who can enjoy panoramic city views from its upper-floors observatory area.
Over the years, the distinctive skyscraper has been featured in numerous films - most famously, perhaps, in the climax of the 1933 adventure classic King Kong (later faithfully recreated, in the 2005 version) - as well as on television (see next section)...
The Empire State Building is an officially-designated New York City Landmark, and a US National Historic Landmark. It's also been listed on the US National Register of Historic Places.
