"City of Doom" is a Thunderbirds comic story, told over nine parts in the pages of TV21, between issues 218 and 226.

Synopsis[]

A ground of South American rebels hijack a plane carrying highly explosive plutonium to use in their revolution. Despite being warned about its highly volatile nature, the rebels do not treat their looted weapons carefully enough and accidentally detonate the whole lot, inundating an entire region of the Andes Mountains with lethal radiation. Not too far from the explosion is Project City, a top-secret World Government initiative to build a city powered by geothermal energy. Trapped inside the city, located deep underground, are a group of scientists completely cut off from the rest of the world, with their only supplies being delivered in six month intervals. The World Government is worried that with the lack of radio contact, the residents will try to break up to the surface, upon which doing so they will be instantly fried with the radioactive fallout. But with the fallout of the explosion affecting a huge area surrounding the city, will International Rescue even be able to get close enough to keep the residents safely inside - and without piquing suspicion from the surviving rebels?

Trivia[]

  • International Rescue's period of relative safety following the events of Brains is Dead comes to an abrupt end in this story, with the Mole being put permanently out of action after falling into a pit of lava, the DOMO being destroyed after coming under attack from the rebel group, and pod 2 plummeting to Earth with the electro-magnetic equipment inside.
  • Somewhat unusually, Thunderbird 3 transports a pod to the rescue area after Thunderbird 2 loses all of the equipment it originally brought. Judging by TB3's less-than-ideal release of the pod, this was the first time such a thing had been done.
