With Scott in command of International Rescue while his father Jeff is away on holiday, Alan is moved up to take his brother's place, as acting pilot of Thunderbird 1: "Guess you take over my old job." When Alan remarks how differently TB1 handles in flight, compared to Thunderbird 3, Scott reminds him, "I want that machine back in one piece..."
And Alan redeems his big brother's trust when, as acting rescue coordinator, he directs two different rescue operations - both involving the massive drilling-rig Seascape.

After safely landing TB1 on Seascape's deck - a tricky business, as the imperiled rig becomes increasingly unstable - Alan again sets up the Mobile Control Centre, this time to oversee Thunderbirds 2 and 4 as they undertake the rescue of two men trapped on the seabed in their diving-bell.
